Guidance about using the extended search interface
The "POGO - Ocean Cruises" search screen is divided into 2 sections. The upper section contains all the tools to manipulate the map and is subdivided into:

- At start up the map displays an empty map of the world. If you want to see all POGO entry locations as contained in the metadatabase, switch on the POGO entries layer, number 3 in figure 1. This will activate all locations as coloured squares. Search results will be displayed in a new browser window on top of these locations with a different colour!
- The (Marsden)grid and bathymetry layers are switched "on" as default setting.
2. Tools (from left to right and then downward)
| Zoom in: | Zoom in on map. Click the button to activate and after this click on the map to zoom in one step. Or click on the map, hold the mouse button and drag to zoom in to an area of choice. Repeat clicking for further zoom in. |
| Zoom out: | Zoom out on map. Click the button to activate and after this click on the map to zoom out one step. Repeat clicking for further zoom out. |
| Pan: | Select a new centre of the map. Click the button to activate and after this click on the map, hold the mouse and drag the map in the direction that you want to display. |
| Identify: | Select entries around a single point on the map. Depending on how far you are zoomed in and how many POGO entries are present near that location, you get one or many results. The results will appear in a new browser window. You can only use "identify" on POGO entries. This requires the POGO entries layer to be switched on. |
| Select by box: | Create a geographical search area. Indicate the area by clicking on the map, holding the mouse button and dragging. The corner coordinates of the area will fill the geowindow (5) on the right. You can combine the box with other search criteria before pressing the SEARCH button. |
| Distance measurement: | After clicking on this button, click with the left mouse-button on the map, hold the button and drag a line between the points you want to measure. At the top of the map the distance between the points in kilometres will be displayed. |
| Reset map | Zoom back to the start screen, resetting the map to default values. |
| Colofon | Open the colofon page in a new window. |
| Enlarge: | Enlarge the map in a new window, to improve it for printing purposes and to capture it as a picture file. |
| Help: | Open this help-section. |
| Position: | Display the geographical location of the mouse pointer at the top-left of the map. |
| Index: | Display a small overview map that will show which part of the world is displayed on the map. |
Layers can be switched on and off by activating the check boxes next to the layer names AND subsequently clicking on the 'Refresh map' button immediately below the list of layers.
3. POGO entries layer
You can opt to switch on the POGO
entries layer. This will show all locations from the database on the map and will also make them
visible on the results map (figure 2). Search results will be displayed on top of these entries
in another color. You will only be able to identify search results. The other entries are only
background information.
The layer control settings will remain active in all further maps within this application.
5. Geowindow search - Specify latitude/longitude for a search- area
In the geowindow the coordinates (longitude/latitude) of the upper-left and the
lower-right corner of the preferred selection area can be filled in manually in decimal degrees
(e.g. 54.921). However it is advised to use the select by box tool (see (2)) to define a
geographical search area.
6. Search in POGO entries metadata
At the bottom of the POGO
search screen you will find the search criteria (6). With these criteria you can build a query
on the database with POGO entries. Choose one or more criteria before you press the SEARCH
button. Remember that the more criteria you choose, the less chance you have of getting results.
But of course your search will be more specific.
- Fill in one or more of the search criteria. You can combine this with an area search on the map made with the 'Select by box' tool of the geowindow (5).
- Then press the "SEARCH" button.
- The results (selected entries) will be displayed in a new browser window. In this window you will only work with the selection!
6.1 The search result window (see figure 2)
The result window is divided in 3
parts:
- An overview map showing the result locations on a map. The results are shown in red, the non-selected entries (when the POGO entries-layer is switched on) are shown in yellow.
- Below the map you will find a listing of all search results. You can use the next/previous to browse through them.
- At the right side of the map the detailed information of the first object in your result list will be displayed as default. On the overview map you will see a yellow square indicating the location of the region of the cruise shown in the overview map. When you identify another result on the map or in the list, the square will move to that object and the details of the entry will be displayed on the right side of the screen.
6.2 Tools in the search result window
Most of the tools used in the search screen
can also be used in the map in the result window:

From left to right:
- Identify: The identify only works on the selected entries (shown in red).
- Zoom in, zoom out, panning and distance measuring.
- Enlarge: Opens a larger picture of the map in a new window. You can use this for printing or you can save the picture to be used in publications, reports etc.
- Position: Displays the geographic position of your mouse cursor
- Index: Displays an insert map showing the location of the results window overview map on the world map.
The results, listed in the lower half of the screen, can be sorted for a number of attributes by clicking on their headings. The sortable attributes are indicated with
